Simple Observation of Car Care on UTC's Campus

I always chalked up the increase in wrecks during the rain to people not knowing how to drive on the slick roads.  I think I and many of my friends may not be correct on this issue.  The past week or so while walking from building to building to take care of the trouble calls in our system I noticed something about the cars parked along the street.  It seemed like every other car or so had something wrong with their tires.  The biggest problem was bald tires that were well beyond their expected use.  Just today I noticed 2 separate cars with one tire so bald that I could barely determine the tred pattern that it once had.  Why do people risk driving on tires like that?  I know that tires can get expensive and as long as they are holding enough air to drive on them most people will put them off.  Why not just go to the local tire shop and get some cheap tires that are at the very least safe compared to what's on the car now.   Spending the $250 or so to get 4 cheap tires has to be better than causing an accident due to the fact your tires had no grip.  The other problem I saw was tires that were so underinflated that a 6 year old would know that it's time to put air in them.  Take the 10 minutes to make sure the tires have the correct pressure, not only does this help the handling but it also keeps the tires from wearing out quicker than normal.  People need to make checking their tires part of their routine when filling up their gas tanks.  Go out and buy a $5 air gauge and check your tire pressure while the car is being fueled.
